Referential art already existed in realism,but expanded in modern time,now interpreted through direct observation or by memory,and or self reference..Realism,like abstract and the other school of modern art is always present represents and continues its life,although there are confusion betweeen realism and naturalism,but they are all a matter of conceptual or appearance levels.It runs from modernism of fin de ciecle in impressionism to realism or concept of planes and spaces in cubism.That's how Cezanne found life in cylider,sphere and cone,and Picasso accepted and expanded it,and so did Braque,and then Mondrian took it to rectangles in his De Stijl.It is reality of artists like magritte or picasso that makes traditional realism stay alive.On the other hand,it is realism who turns coat and is disguised and expressed in abstraction,to show inside out.The main feature in definition of modern style and modern art ,Art nouveau of France,Futurism of Italy and Pre-revolutionary RussiaJugendstil of Gernay-Austriais avoiding immitation and value the creativity.
